Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Fortunately, of all cancer types diagnosed in Canada, colorectal cancer incidence is declining the fastest, and survival rates have been improving steadily.1
Nevertheless, colorectal cancer accounts for 10% of all new cancer cases,2 so it is important to promote awareness and screening for early detection when it is most treatable and curable.
Risk factors that increase the chance of developing colorectal cancer include:
- Inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis
- Having benign (noncancerous) polyps
- A personal history of colorectal cancer
- A family history of colorectal cancer
- Inherited syndromes, such as Lynch syndrome
